Developmental Editing: The Big-Picture Pass<\/h2>\n

Developmental editing happens first, usually on an early or complete first draft. It’s not about commas \u2014 it’s about whether the book works. A developmental editor looks at structure, pacing, plot holes or argument gaps, character consistency, and whether the manuscript delivers on what it promises the reader. Expect detailed editorial notes, a chapter-by-chapter breakdown, and possibly a full restructuring recommendation. This pass often triggers real rewriting, not just polishing.<\/p>\n

If your manuscript still has scenes that don’t earn their place, an argument that loses the thread halfway through, or a middle section that drags, this is the stage you need \u2014 before anything else.<\/p>\n

Copyediting: The Line-by-Line Pass<\/h2>\n

Copyediting comes after the structure is settled. A copyeditor works sentence by sentence, fixing grammar, awkward phrasing, word choice, consistency (character names, timelines, terminology), and readability. They’re not restructuring your book \u2014 they’re making every sentence in the book you’ve already built say exactly what you mean, clearly.<\/p>\n

Proofreading is the last step before publication, done on a fully formatted, near-final layout. It is deliberately narrow in scope \u2014 a proofreader isn’t rewriting sentences or questioning structure, just catching what’s technically wrong on the page.<\/p>\n
